history

Camping Country Australia is a proudly owned Sunshine Coast family business. The business was first established in 1993 on the back of Margy and Robert's (aka. Mum and Dad) love for the great outdoors. Camping, particularly in QLD delivered Mum and Dad the type of fun recreational experience they were seeking for themselves and us three kids, Jarrod, Renai and Olivia. It was during one of our family camping trips that Mum and Dad discussed the possibility of turning their passion for camping into a business. A place that would encourage other Sunshine Coast families to get outdoors and have heaps of fun with their kids whilst exploring the wonders of not only the Sunshine Coast, but all that Queensland had to offer.

That was nearly 18 years ago; over that time we've moved three times and our business has grown as the Sunshine Coast has. What had started out as a small family business has now injected millions of dollars into our local economy. We provide numerous employment opportunities for residents of the Sunny Coast and it's all because of the desire to  provide our customers with the best gear they need for the best family fun time.

Consistently evolving in the camping industry has been change. Fifteen to twenty years ago, camping involved finding a good location, making sure you had a tent, a steel plate to cook on, and a couple of iceboxes to store food and water; all to be strategically positioned around an open fire place.

That now seems light years away from the camping experience of today, where a camp can have a four or five roomed tent with annex embodying hot and cold showers and toilet facilities.

To take Camping Country Australia forward in this changing world Mum and Dad have appointed myself as General Manager of the store, and have given my wife Kerri and I the opportunity to buy into the family business. Kerri and I are local people and have 2 beautiful daughter's Maisie and Sari. I have the dreams and aspirations to become the “camping guru” acquiring a wealth of camping knowledge and skills through my life long camping history. I believe hard work on the back of a strong planning platform is the stuff that will deliver my dreams for the business.

Since taking on my new role, with the support of my parents and a number of mentors, one of the first major initiatives has been the focus on the business’ staff education and training program. I want my staff to have all the knowledge possible about camping. So how do I do this? It's simple, I just take my staff camping,  because I trust the camping experience.

My emphasis is that once you have customer orientated staff with first hand knowledge and information I then need to have a store that makes customers feel welcome and allow them to become excited about their next camping trip. I try to have the layout and merchandise in my store organised so that customers and staff feel relaxed and have time to obtain the knowledge about camping gear and how to use the gear so they have a real chance of making their camping dreams come true.

My aspirations for Camping Country Australia will be determined by closely monitoring the growth in the camping recreational market and aligning our family business with any shift in market sentiment - ensuring that at all times I'm in touch with my customers.
